Welcome to a new series on The Journal “Get to Know the Faces Behind Betts” a series were we showcase some of the talented people that work behind the scenes to make the Betts vision come to life. To launch the new series we interviewed our Rundle Mall Store Manager, Claire McNally to find out more about her what it’s like working as a Store Manager at Betts and to talk about her fashion blog Way of Wear.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
Hi I’m Claire, I'm 24 years old and live in Adelaide. I've worked for Betts as a Store Manager for five years and I started my fashion blog, Way of Wear, three years ago now. My partner of five years just popped the questions so I'm also newly engaged! I love all things fashion so I spend my days off researching, shooting and writing for my blog to create new and exciting content!
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS STORE MANAGER AT BETTS?
As a store manager at Betts I'm responsible for my entire store including sales, recruitment, rostering and training of my team, visual merchandising, the highest standard of product knowledge and management, just to name a few! As a store manager I'm also responsible for how my shop runs and everything that goes with it. In comparison to other companies, I like that Betts allows Managers to have a sense of ownership of their stores. Store Managers are accountable for their stores and are given the tools and abilities to do so. You're given the independence to manage your store, obviously reflecting the Betts Group values, but you're given a high level of trust rather than having the company manage it for you. This to me, is what stands out when working as a Store Manager.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE A CAREER AT BETTS?
I wanted to pursue a career in Retail Management after having had retail experience throughout school and university. I was actually out applying for jobs when I decided to stop in at Betts for a quick (and well deserved!) shoe shopping break. My regional manager, happened to serve me and we got talking and so I applied that day! I liked that when I walked into Betts I always felt welcome straight away and the staff genuinely wanted to help you. Of course I had a love for shoes (naturally!) and I've always worn Betts because the styles have always been inspired by high end fashion at a much MUCH more affordable price! After I started as a Part Timer initially, I was trained up to become a Manager and after six months I landed my first Store Manager role!
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
There are a lot of different things I do each day in my role but, in particular I love helping customers on a mission! When a customer comes in and they've been hunting for a specific style or a shoe to match a special outfit and I'm able to help them find that and complete the look. That's the most rewarding part of working at Betts – getting to know my customers, building rapport and having customers that come back to tell you how much they're liking their new pair of shoes!
WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE BETTS STYLES AND WHY?
I am obsessed with all the loafers and slides this season! They’re super easy to style with straight leg jeans, a tee and a blazer for effortless style or pair them back with culottes and a flare sleeve blouse for a corporate look! I'm definitely a boot girl and my season favourite has to be EQUINOX. I love that it's a Chelsea boot with a twist and a great height for all day wear.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BLOG WAY OF WEAR?
I started my blog at the beginning of 2014. As I spent a lot of time online reading other fashion blogs (my favourites are Twice Blessed and Harper and Harley), it was something that I really wanted to start up myself. I always enjoyed writing and photography as well so I felt that starting a blog would definitely be something I would enjoy every aspect of. I called my blog Way of Wear because one of the key messages I want to communicate to my readers is that it's not about what you wear it's the way you wear it that matters!
Way of Wear is about teaching my readers how to style, showing them how easy putting outfits together can be and really trying to take that stress out of getting ready. I recently completed my Advanced Certificate of Style and Image at Australian Style Institute so I really try to incorporate styling advice into my blog. I always try to base my posts around how to style the looks using different pieces in your wardrobe as well. I always try to put my own spin on it because the way you style an outfit really is what makes it unique.
HOW DOES WORKING AT BETTS INSPIRE OR INFLUENCE THE CONTENT YOU CREATE?
I'm surrounded by fashion and style everyday so I'm always inspired by new styles and the endless ways of creating different looks. I also get to discover new ways of styling looks that might be out of my own comfort zone but are really diverse and that allows me to get more creative with my content.
WHAT KIND OF CONTENT DO YOU LOVE CREATING?
Definitely content that helps people with their own wardrobe. I like writing 'how to style' pieces whether it's a new trend, outfit ideas you can wear from the office to drinks or how to give your old pair of jeans new life! I want my content to be helpful to my readers and something they can relate to.
WHAT/WHO IS YOUR GO-TO FOR STYLE INSPIRATION?
Alexa Chung! I wouldn't say that my style is at all similar to hers but I love her androgynous vibe and how her quirky and bubbly personality reflects in whatever she wears.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE?
Minimalistic, layered, structured and with a point of difference. I also opt for pieces that are versatile and that you can wear in different ways for a new look. Like layering a dress over jeans or a bustier over a basic tee, to get more value out of those dressier pieces, creating more looks with less items.
DO YOU HAVE ANY FASHION ‘RULES’ WHEN PUTTING AN OUTFIT TOGETHER?
Not really. If you love it and you feel confident in it – wear it! The wonderful thing about dressing is you can be someone different every day. Sometimes I want to wear a structured blazer with high waisted dress pants and the next day a flowy dress and a baker boy hat! Fashion is a story and the way you style it is how it will be told.
WHAT IS THE ONE WARDROBE ESSENTIAL YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
My leather biker jacket. It's the perfect piece for layering with any outfit. It makes me feel instantly stylish and it dresses up any outfit – jeans on the weekend or a dress on a night out.
