“Get to Know the Faces Behind Betts” is a series where we showcase some of the talented people that work at Betts. In Part 2, we interviewed our Mt Gravatt Store Manager, Patty Eastwood to talk about her passion for illustrating and her favourite new season Betts shoes.
COULD YOU START BY TELLING US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
Hi I’m Patty, I am 30 years old and I am a Digital Illustrator and Betts Group Store Manager based in Brisbane. I thoroughly enjoy anything in screaming colours and prints but I hold a sweet spot for pastels and shades of black. I currently reside in Brisbane with my husband and we just celebrated our four year wedding anniversary. I am the eldest of eight children, so I’m a natural born leader.
WHEN DID YOU BEGIN ILLUSTRATING?
I began properly illustrating in 2009 after attending a course at TAFE. I started digital illustrating no less than two years ago and have never looked back. If we count the multitudes of artworks I have given to my family growing up we could say that I began illustrating/drawing before I could walk. It’s honestly a passion I have held onto since I was young.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN ILLUSTRATING?
I remember when I was younger in my downtime laying on the lounge room floor watching my mother draw. My mother composed the most amazing landscape art. I loved watching her lay down her plan and literally lay down on the ground because that’s how she likes to draw. I would watch her use all the shades of greens, blues and browns until the pieces were finished. I would always try my best to draw landscape like her but trees weren’t for me and I soon learned that I loved drawing clothing. I got my keen eye for detail from my mother which has really helped me progress. From then on every Christmas and birthday I would get new pencils or watercolour paints or even those fashion paper dolls where you shaded in the clothes yourself. My family always nurtured my art.
WHAT TOOLS/PROGRAMS DO YOU USE WHEN ILLUSTRATING?
To illustrate I currently use my laptop for referencing clients photos or looking through the latest fashion trends. I use my IPhone 7 Plus to record time lapse and My IPad Pro 12.9 inch as a canvas. The most important tool of all and it was a game changer is my Apple Pencil. My two favourite go to apps for illustrating is ProCreate and Paper FiftyThree. I use ProCreate for their layer abilities, the screen capture function and the stunning array of digital brushes that you can use and customise for any illustration. I prefer using Paper FiftyThree for the colour mixing wheel and when I’m filling in the illustrations.
WHAT KIND OF CONTENT DO YOU LOVE CREATING?
I love creating fashion pieces, whether it be my own where I’ve been inspired by current trends and want to put my own spin on it or whether it be I want to pay tribute to a designer because they have created a piece of clothing that I find would make a stunning illustration. I recently found out in the last six months that I can also do character illustrations, illustrating is about growing and I believe by dipping my toe into that category it has helped my style evolve.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ILLUSTRATION STYLE?
I would describe my illustration style with saying the word ‘detailed’. It’s all about attention to detail for me and that’s what I’m good at, getting those small details on those illustrations that tie it back in with its original idea or reference. That is what my clients enjoy the most about my illustrations, is the detailing I put into them.
WHO/WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO FOR INSPIRATION?
When I’m not scouring the internet or social media to see what’s currently trending, I get my inspiration from the ones who surround me. My Husband just like my Mother and my Grandmother has always encouraged me to draw. One of our first dates I showed him my TAFE portfolio and he was so excited for me. Every time we walked past a art store he would always ask me if I wanted a canvas or a new art book and then when the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil came out that was his present to me so I could keep drawing on the go and take it everywhere with me. During the start of winter we went down to Sydney to spend time with family and while there I was inspired to illustrate purely being surrounded by them all. I remember sitting on the floor and my niece and nephews watched me illustrate and it pushed me even more because I wanted to show them my best. I have such a large family, I am also surrounded by people who are passionate about their craft, whether it be being a parent, a teacher, a athlete or a fellow artist. These people inspire me with their own passion. I am always encouraged to illustrate by them all and they are always so supportive of my art.
WHAT ARE YOU FAVOURITE BETTS SHOES AT THE MOMENT? WHY?
I have a few favourites, I love SARDINIA, it’s this effortless slide with chic uppers, perfect for the Queensland climate and the Australian summer. For us in Queensland it’s a day and night shoe.
Next on the flats train is PAYBACK, if you haven’t tried this shoe on then you need to ASAP! It has a sponge like base that would be great for travelling, shopping or even dancing, plus it comes in all your favourite summer colours!
In Ascending (heel height) order is PARIS, this is a sleek stiletto with a stunning point at the tip of the toe. Perfect for looking fab-u-Lous at any event or for taking over the world. Don’t get me started on the uppers either! It comes in 5 different colours (one for each working day of the week) and four of them are hi- shine so they have my vote.
Last but not least is HAWAII, am I the only one who sees this shoe out everywhere? Perfect for towering over loved ones at family get togethers or partying the night away at formals and events. I love how effortless they are but they are so to the point. They are the four styles I am currently crushing on at Betts.
